Check out our map of ‘Magellan’s Journey Around the World.’ Discover the path the expedition took, Spanish and Portuguese claims, and important events that led to the first circumnavigation of the world. Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who organized the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Magellan’s expedition was funded largely by the Spanish Crown. Expert cartographers Jorge Reinel and Diogo Ribeiro, took part in the development of the maps to be used in the travel and on September 20, 1519 five ships left Spain on what they hoped would open up a trading route to the Far East. On September 6, 1522 the remaining crew of Magellan’s voyage arrived back in Spain. Only 18 of the original crew of 270 made it back to Spain – Magellan was not one of them. He died on April 27, 1521 in the Philippines. The remaining crew continued on their voyage west. Learn more about Magellan
