A blowout occured on Platform A on January 28, 1969, rupturing the channel floor and causing oil and gas to seep from several newly formed fissures. The massive oil slicks stretched more than 20 miles down the coast and 40 miles out to sea. The disaster helped convince congress to pass the National Environmental Policy Act.
